Environmental Initiatives

The Managing director of Betapest, Nathan Roberts, has always had a strong interest in and commitment to the natural environment and possesses an Honours degree in Marine Biology and a Masters degree in Wildlife Management at Liverpool and Reading Universities respectively. Whilst studying Nathan always managed to find time to pursue his interest in conservation work, and still enjoys volunteering his services with a local bird ringing group. Nathan’s environmentally aware and forward thinking policies place Betapest at the forefront of the pest control industry in this area. Betapest’s main environmental initiatives are summarised below.
Targeted trapping
Targeted trapping reduces dependence on toxic chemicals, making it a more environmentally friendly method of pest control. When carried out by our experienced pest controllers it can also be a highly effective means of control for a variety of pest species.
Effective exclusion methods and environment management
Whenever practical we advocate the use of exclusion methods and environment management to reduce future risk of re-infestation. This practice reduces your long term pest control requirements and decreases the need for chemical control. This is part of Betapest’s ‘prevention is better than cure’ philosophy that we feel is an important aspect of delivering sustainable and environmentally sound pest control.
Environmentally responsible baiting
When bait is laid on any new site by a Betapest representative, a written risk assessment is carried out. One reason for doing this is to ensure we identify if there are likely to be any threatened species in the vicinity that could be affected by the treatment and also to put in place measures that reduce bait exposure to non-target species and choose baits of appropriate toxicity for the environment.
Protection of endangered and harmless species through education
There is concern for the current status and future of several of our bumble-bee and bird species. At Betapest we endeavour to help protect such animals as best as we can, without compromising the safety and peace of mind of the customer. Education is often as simple as providing a correct identification of a harmless insect and giving good verbal and written information to the customer.
Bumble bee relocation
This is a service we provide in order to avoid the destruction of a hazardously located Bumble Bee nest. We recognise the unique role these bees play in pollinating certain flowers and as such provide the removal and relocation to another site where the nest can continue undisturbed for the rest of the season. Unfortunately in certain situations the nest may be too inaccessible to remove and we may be required to carry out a control treatment.
Discounted bird nesting box supply and fit
This service can be provided when our work on your premises denies birds’ access to a suitable or known nesting site. The scheme provides ideal alternative nesting areas for birds whose survival is under threat.

Both House Sparrows and Starlings have recently been removed from a general licence following serious declines in their population numbers and they have been placed on a list of birds of greatest conservation concern. The general licence is a piece of legislation which permits action to be taken against a small number of birds that in certain situations can be regarded as pest species.

House Sparrows and Starlings are commonly found nesting in buildings and while Betapest has always felt a responsibility to protect these birds they are now protected by law. We therefore cannot and will not interfere with these birds while they are nesting, however if proofing is required when the nests are not in use we would encourage you to take advantage of our discounted nesting box supply and instillation in order to provide alternative nest sites for the birds.
